Recommended Features
The first thing we generally look up when reviewing a thermostat is whether it is connected to the internet. We also pay close attention to its climate-control modes to see if it's able to automatically minimize energy use when requested, as well as keep room temperature within a specific range automatically.
Remote Control
You should be able to remotely control your thermostat from anywhere. This nearly always implies that your smart thermostat has a direct connection to the internet or is connected to a nearby hub.
Eco Mode
This feature lets your thermostat automatically adjust to the most energy efficient temperature while ensuring that your property is protected from extreme heat or cold.
Auto Mode
We generally prefer thermostats that are able to automatically adjust the heating or cooling mode based on a temperature range. This removes the need to occasionally switch HVAC mode.
Electricity Powered
Many smart thermostats now have the ability to 'steal' power from the control wires to your HVAC system. This ensures that they can run indefinitely without the need to change batteries.
